In Memoriam: Capt. George W. Duffy, WWII P.O.W.

DUFFY, Captain George W. WWII P.O.W. Age 94, of Exeter NH, formerly of Newburyport and Seabrook, NH, died Tuesday at Exeter Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Margaret M. (Doyle) Duffy. Born in Haverhill, he was the son of the late George W. and Alice (Lanen) Duffy. He was a 1939 graduate of Newburyport High School, and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, class of 1941. George served in the US Merchant Marines during WWII, and later attended and graduated from Boston State College. During WWII, George was a Prisoner of War for nearly 4 years. After the war, he attained his Maritime Captain's license. He retired as a shipping agent for the ports of Boston, Portsmouth, and Portland. Member of various maritime associations. George was an author, and wrote Ambushed under the Southern Cross. 

He is survived by his two daughters; Maryellen Duffy and her husband Jerald Cabana of Amesbury, and Geraldine A. Carter and her husband Warren of Exeter, NH; five granddaughters; Caitlyn Balmer and her husband Paul of New Canaan, CT, Marilyn Duffy-Cabana and Andrea Duffy- Cabana, both of New York City, Anne Carter and her fiancé Sam Dahlstedt of Newton, and Christine Courbon and her husband Julien of New York City; two great-grandchildren; Luke and Wesley Balmer; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of the late Eleanor Lessard, Natalie Notargiacomo, Robert Duffy and Richard Duffy. 
His funeral will be held on Monday, March 6th, at 9:30AM from the Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Funeral Home, 35 Green St, Newburyport, followed by a funeral mass at 10:30 AM in Immaculate Conception Church, Newburyport. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Newburyport. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Sunday from 4-7PM. Donations are preferred to Mass Maritime Academy, c/o Advancement Office, 101 Academy Drive, Buzzards Bay, MA 02532.
